Sonata medication information.

Chemical Name: ZALEPLON (ZAL-e-plon)

What is Sonata?
Sonata is a prescription medicine for people who have trouble sleeping, a condition known as insomnia. Sonata is chemically different from other prescription sleep aids, and it seems to cause less morning drowsiness than the others do. Studies have shown that Sonata reduces the time it takes to fall asleep by 10 to 20 minutes in people with insomnia.

Sonata has been studied only for the short-term treatment of insomnia (days to weeks). No one knows how safe or effective it is if you use it for longer than 28 days.

The usual dose of Sonata is 5 mg to 20 mg at bedtime. Take it right before going to bed, or after you're in bed and having trouble sleeping. You can take it with or without food, but avoid high-fat foods with Sonata because they can delay its action.

Common uses:
This medicine is a nonbenzodiazepine hypnotic agent used for the short-term treatment of insomnia due to difficulty falling asleep.

Directions:
Follow your doctors directions for using this medicine. This medicine comes with a patient information leaflet. Read it carefully. Ask your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist any questions that you may have about this medicine. THIS MEDICINE WORKS VERY QUICKLY. Take this medicine immediately before going to bed or after you have gone to bed and have had trouble falling asleep. Take this medicine only when you will be able to sleep 4 hours or longer. Avoid taking this medicine with or after a high-fat meal. Doing so may delay when the medicine will begin to work. STORE THIS MEDICINE at room temperature between 68 and 77 degrees F (20 and 25 degrees C) in a tightly-closed container, away from heat and light.

Possible side effects:
A SIDE EFFECT that may occur while taking this medicine is short-term memory loss. If they persist or are uncomfortable, check with your doctor. CHECK WITH YOUR DOCTOR AS SOON AS POSSIBLE if you experience daytime drowsiness or change in moods or behavior. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist.

The most common side effects of Sonata include stomach upset, weakness, and muscle aches. Less frequently, Sonata may cause memory problems. It doesn't seem to cause morning drowsiness after you've slept. Because Sonata is a sleeping pill, it does cause drowsiness. Don't take it before driving or operating machinery.
